Why I  #JoinedOurCrew

Before working at Side by Side Kids as Social Media Coordinator, I was a Crew Leader at Webb Primary School. As a public relations major at the University of Texas, teaching elementary-aged students was never something I thought I would be doing. As someone who came into college not having a relationship with Jesus, working at a ministry was also not something I had planned for myself.

Thankfully, God had other plans. I went on a mission trip the summer before my sophomore year at UT and it changed both of those things for me. I came back from Panama with a heart for children and a focus set on God. Still, I had no idea how to pursue these newfound passions back in Austin.

That's where Side by Side Kids came in.

When I saw the job description online, I was shocked - it seemed like the Crew Leader position was tailor-made for me. I applied immediately, and I'm so thankful I did. By God’s grace, I started working as a Crew Leader and I was amazed at how my prayers were answered.

There are many reasons why I loved my time as a Crew Leader, but these are the main 5:

1. Cute Kids:

2. Awesome Site Coordinators

My Site Coordinator didn’t just see me as an employee but as a sister in Christ. I was always excited to come to work because of Raquel, who offered me encouragement and support in my new position. When things outside of work were difficult, she prayed for me and with me. It was so strange to have a boss that truly cared about me as a person! It was a welcomed change and something I was truly blessed by.

3. Friendships

Not only was my Site Coordinator awesome, but so were my fellow Crew Leaders. I had never hung out with any of my previous coworkers outside of work before, but Side by Side Kids introduced me to some really great friends that I still keep in touch with today.

4. Faith Development

It might sound silly, but as a new believer, I think I learned as many new things as the kids through Side by Side Kids’ curriculum. Going through the basics and having the Bible Stories I grew up hearing explained in simple terms once again reaffirmed my understanding of them.

5. Making a Difference

My favorite memory from my time as a Crew Leader was when I was teaching about the Holy Spirit. I was explaining that the Holy Spirit is God living in us when suddenly one of my students exclaimed, “Wait… I have a part of God inside of me?!” The look on his face was one of sheer amazement. As I nodded yes, a huge smile swept across his face. “Wow! I can’t believe it,” he sighed to himself. “Thank you, Miss! I never knew that God is here, inside of me.

Moments like that - moments where my students just “got it” were so sweet. It reminded me that God could even use me, a sophomore in college who just came to faith, as His hands and feet.
