Our Story

1996

Side by Side Kids (SBSK), formerly known as Community New Start, began as a mercy ministry through Redeemer Presbyterian Church, serving the St. John's Community.

2000

SBSK launched a program at its flagship school, T.A. Brown Elementary.

2002

SBSK launched a program at school #2, J.J. Pickle Elementary.

2003

SBSK became an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to serving kids.

2009

SBSK secured executive leadership, solidified hiring processes, and upgraded training.

2010

SBSK staff developed a new, custom, faith-based curriculum, started new fundraising events, and created the annual Summer Kids Club Camp.

2011

SBSK rebranded, refocused their mission and vision, and strengthened their policies.

2012

SBSK launched two mobile math and reading labs with iPads.

2013

SBSK implemented new program evaluation tools and secured an exemption from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

2014

SBSK moved to the For the City Center, expanded their board, and strengthened staff connections.

2015

SBSK developed the Love More Kids expansion plan and launched a program at school #3, Webb Primary, and wrote an additional year of faith-based curriculum.

2016

SBSK launched a program at school #4, Mollie Barrington Elementary, and piloted a Summer Scholars Program.

2017

SBSK launched programs at school #5 and #6, Lee Lewis Campbell Elementary and Oak Hill Elementary.

2018

SBSK successfully organized its first large scale event, Heart of a Lion, featuring First Lady Laura Bush.

2019

SBSK's Heart of a Lion Gala featured Tim Tebow.
