Side by Side Kids (SBSK) provides free, afterschool programs to public school students in East Austin. We serve elementary students from some of the most under-resourced neighborhoods in Austin, where thousands of kids have no supervision or a safe place to go after the bell rings. SBSK curriculum was developed with University of Texas professors to encourage and equip children through personalized homework help, a healthy meal, mentoring, and a character-building curriculum. We are proud to say that 98% of our students advance to the next grade level.
We are privately funded with the support of individuals, foundations, churches, and businesses. Side by Side Kids was honored to receive the prestigious Chick-fil-A Foundation's 2016 "True Inspiration Awards," which recognizes nonprofits around the country for their impact on youth. We are proud of our highly respected programs and selection to the Texas Public Broadcasting Systems (PBS) advisory team to assist with the creation of resources for teachers. Side by Side Kids is supported by public school principals, teachers, parents, and the local community.
We are on a mission to inspire and equip kids in East Austin to be excellent students, make wise choices, and follow Christ.
To achieve our mission, we focus on character traits such as compassion, kindness, and perseverance. We incorporate a variety of teaching strategies through reading, physical activities, music, games, and art.
Principal Navaro at Travis Height Elementary School shares how SBSK builds a positive, supportive, and impactful environment for her students.
